Location / Area　位置・面積 Yokosuka City occupies the central part of the Miura Peninsula in south-eastern Kanagawa Prefecture and faces Tokyo Bay to the east and Sagami Bay to the west. It is located 50 km from Tokyo, and 20 km from Yokohama. The northern edge of Yokosuka City (north latitude 35°20′) faces Yokohama City. The southern edge (north latitude 35°11′) faces Miura City. From north to south, Yokosuka City extends 15.8 km. The eastern edge of Yokosuka City (east latitude 139°45′) faces the mouth of Tokyo Bay. The western edge (east latitude 139°35′) faces Hayama, Miura District. From east to west, Yokosuka City extends 15.3 km. The city area encompasses 100.68 km². 　横須賀市は神奈川県の南東、三浦半島の中央部にあり、東は東京湾、西は相模湾に面しています。 　東京から50km、横浜から20kmの圏内にあります。 　市の北端(北緯35°20′)は、横浜市に面しています。南端(北緯35°11′)は三浦市に面しています。南北はおよそ15.8kmです。 　市の東端(東経139°45′)は、東京湾口に面しています。西端(東経139°35′)は、三浦郡葉山町に面しています。東西はおよそ15.3kmです。 　市域面積は100.68k㎡です。 Geographical Characteristics　地形 Yokosuka City has an elevation of between 100 and 200 meters, and is made up of many hilly and mountainous areas. At 242 meters, Mt. Ogusuyama is the Miura Peninsula’s highest peak. With its hiking courses and its abundance of flowers, such as cherry blossoms, plum blossoms and rape blossoms, Mt. Ogusuyama is the perfect place to enjoy the peninsula’s rich nature and the different colors of the seasons. Hemmed as it is by sea to the east and west, Yokosuka City has, since its first days, prospered as a center of the ship-building industry. With its scenic beaches and headlands, Yokosuka City is also a popular destination for visitors from the Tokyo metropolitan area. 　横須賀市は、標高100～200mの起伏の多い丘陵や山地で構成されています。 　三浦半島最高峰(242m)の大楠山には、ハイキングコースが整備され、桜・梅・菜の花など四季を彩る花々をはじめ豊かな自然を楽しむことができます。 　東西が海に接しているため、古くから造船の町として栄えるとともに、風光明媚な岬と砂浜には、多数の観光客が東京近郊から訪れます。 Climate　気象 With the warm Kurishio Current flowing through the waters surrounding the Miura Peninsula, Yokosuka City has a comfortable climate, enjoying warm winters, cool summers, and relatively mild temperature extremes. Yokosuka is also famous as the northernmost natural distribution point of the subtropical Hamayu Beach Lily. For the year 2007, Yokosuka City’s average temperature was 16.9℃, with a maximum temperature of 36.1℃ and a minimum temperature of 0.8℃. 　横須賀市が位置している三浦半島の周囲の海には、暖流黒潮が流れているため、冬は暖かく、夏は涼しく、気温の高低が比較的少ない、すごしやすい土地です。 　また、亜熱帯椊物浜木綿の自生分布地として、最北限の地として有名です。 　横須賀市の2007年の平均気温は16.9℃、最高気温は36.1℃、最低気温は0.8℃でした。 Industries　産業 From the 19th century, Yokosuka City thrived as a ship-building village. Following the Second World War, however, Yokosuka turned to peace-time industries such as the automobile industry. Automobiles are now produced in Yokosuka for export all over the world. From the second half of the 20th century, Yokosuka City turned its key industries to the IT field. Today, the Yokosuka Research Park (YRP: an industrial park specializing in mobile information and communications research) has brought together many well-known enterprises, both international and domestic, and is becoming a city-wide and nation-wide hub for next-generation industries. The YRP is in the process of exchanging agreements for research cooperation, personnel exchange and other joint activities with its counterpart research facility in Korea (The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute [ETRI]). 　1800年代以降、造船の町として栄えた横須賀市は、第2次世界大戦後、自動車産業を中心に、平和産業港湾都市として再生を目指しました。横須賀で作られた自動車が、横須賀の港から世界中に輸出されていきました。 　1900年代後半からの、横須賀市の基幹産業にIT分野が加わりました。 　現在では、移動体情報通信分野の研究所を誘致した産業団地(横須賀リサーチパーク[YRP])に、国内外の有名企業が集積し、横須賀市のそして日本の次世代の産業を担う拠点となっています。 　YRPは、韓国の研究機関(電子情報研究員[ETRI])と研究交流についての覚書を取り交わし人材交流等を進めています。 Population / Households　人口・世帯 According to population estimates as at Jan 1, 2009, Yokosuka’s population was 420,187, with 164,073 households. Compared with figures from the same month the previous year, there was an increase of 1,210 in population, and 1,039 households. Looking at population by gender, there were 209,688 males, and 210,499 females, with a male gender ratio of 0.99. The average household was composed of 2.56 people. 　2009年１月１日現在の推計人口によると、横須賀市の人口は420,187人、世帯数は164,073世帯で、前年同月に比べ、人口は1,210人の減少、世帯数は1,039世帯の増加となっています。 　人口を男女別にみると、男性は209,688人、女性は210,499人で、女性１人に対する男性の数は0.99です。また、１世帯当たりの人口は2.56人です。
